VH1 often kept us enthralled with its Behind The Music series, showing the high and lows that our favorite rock icons went through. They’ve graduated to biopics now, and coming in October is CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.
“Akeelah and the Bee’s” Keke Palmer is all grown up as Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Drew Sidora (“That’s So Raven) plays Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins. In perhaps the most important role, rapper Lil’ Mama is Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Lil’ Mama’s best known for her hit “Lip Gloss,” one of the earwormiest songs in all of hip-hop.
The groundbreaking girl group was part of the soundtrack of the 90s, tackling taboo topics such as HIV in their music. Like many young artists before them, they didn’t understand how quickly all that money can go away. They ended up filing bankruptcy, and Lopes died in a car accident.
At one point, the group tried to make a comeback and was faced with replacing the irreplaceable Lopes. That led to the unfortunate reality series “R U The Girl?” UPN billed it as finding a new member of the group, Watkins and Thomas later said the winner would only perform on a new single with them.
With all the twists and the turns in the TLC journey, this biopic almost writes itself. We’ll see what VH1 came up with in October.
