NBC began its coverage of English Premier League Soccer Saturday with three live matches. The Swansea City vs. Manchester game got a 0.8 overnight rating, the highest for a Premier League opening weekend in the United States. NBC paid $250 million for three years of rights to air these games.
The network will offer a number of viewing options. NBC Sports Network will show two matches live on cable, and another match will air on NBC on Saturdays. NBC Sports Network will air two Sunday matches and one Monday match. Cable properties CNBC, Telemundo and mun2 will air games too. Streaming service NBC Sports Live extra will cover every Premier League match.
NBC has long had ambitions of conquering the sports arena, but has struggled with execution. During the 2012 Olympics, NBC’s live streams were very spotty. Rather than apologize, the network blamed users with slower computers and the bandwidth from cable providers. There was also the ill-fated Olympic Triplecast, in which NBC thought viewers would pay as much as $170 to watch amateur sports.
The primary difference is the worldwide popularity of professional soccer. If it could be the network to create a market in America, The Peacock Network would have a very solid return on its investment.
