CNN lured Rachel Nichols away from ESPN in hopes of making her a bigger star. The next phase in that plan begins Sept. 20 at 10:30 p.m. Eastern. All we really know about Rachel Nichols: Unguarded right now is the title and the timeslot. There are rumors that this is the timeslot Alec Baldwin’s MSNBC show will air in. Some are calling it a preemptive strike against Baldwin. I’m not sure how effective that would be. How many viewers are looking for discussion of Obama’s latest policies and decide they’d rather watch sports highlights?
The cable news channel used to have regular sports coverage. While it never drew the ratings or pop culture cache that ESPN did, it wasn’t bad. The Fred Hickman/Nick Charles anchor combo was pretty entertaining. CNN is deploying its big guns in September. In addition to Nichols, also coming next month are the revamped Crossfire and AC360 Later starring Anderson Cooper.
