The ongoing “Skyler is a Bitch” controversy among Breaking Bad fans has reached an unlikely spot, the New York Times op-ed page, with a contribution from the most credible author of all: Anna Gunn, the actress who plays Skyler.
Gunn authored an op-ed, published Saturday, titled “I Have a Character Issue,” in which she shared that not only do many fans of the show hate her character, but they have at times directed their hatred at Gunn herself- even, in some cases, with threats of violence:
My character, to judge from the popularity of Web sites and Facebook pages devoted to hating her, has become a flash point for many people’s feelings about strong, nonsubmissive, ill-treated women. As the hatred of Skyler blurred into loathing for me as a person, I saw glimpses of an anger that, at first, simply bewildered me.
It’s bad enough to misinterpret and misread one of our greatest TV series. But to do so in a way that rains hatred and threats onto an actress doing her job, very well I may add? That’s just disgusting.
Good for Gunn for standing tall and writing this, and good for the Times for publishing it.
