Believe or not, there were a few things happening during the VMAs that didn’t involve Miley Cyrus or various celebrity reactions to her. Summit Entertainment began moving into place with “Divergent,” its attempt to cash in on the lucrative genre of teens finding love while implausible wars break out. A new trailer debuted during the award show, since its target market was tuned in for twerking and talk about twerking.
It is based on Veronica Roth’s novel set in a dystopian Chicago. The society has broken into five personality-based factions. Heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior’s parents belong to the selfless Abnegation faction. She wants to join the Dauntless group composed of fearless daredevils. It turns out she is Divergent, meaning she doesn’t fit into any faction. In this society, divergence is bad. Tris’ trainer Four will help keep her alive and spoiler, they fall in love.
Shailene Woodley and Theo James are hoping to be the next hot onscreen couple. Also in the cast are Kate Winslet, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, Maggie Q and Zoe Kravitz.
The third book in Roth’s trilogy, Allegiant, is coming Oct. 22. It will tell part of its story from both Tris’ perspective and part from Four’s. Divergent is coming March 21, 2014. Let’s get dystopian, everybody!
