Remember how “Fast and Furious” (“The Fast and the Furious”, actually) started out? That’s right, as a one-off car racing extravaganza, starring a bunch of no-name muscular and/or pretty boys, plus some exotic hotties and oodles of strong, shiny, snazzy automobiles.
So exactly when did that turn into a star-packed action franchise? Not sure, but if we’re not all careful we might end up with a second “Expendables” on our hands. Which come to think of it, may not be all that bad, as long as Universal doesn’t go overboard with the cast additions (you know, as Sly seems to be doing).
For now, “Fast & Furious 7”, which is already slated for a summer 2014 premiere, has Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson and Tony Jaa locked in bigger or smaller roles, with Ronda Rousey also in the mix.
And then there’s Kurt Russell, who’s reportedly in negotiations, but, just my guess, is a long way from being truly and completely attached to the flick. I think we can all remember how the aging actor hero of the 1980s and early ‘90s was all set to star in Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”, even filmed with the crew for months, but then backed out at the very last moment due to “creative differences” with the director.
In fact, Russell has been keeping an unusually low profile of late, basically only starring in “Death Proof”, another, far less praised Tarantino film, in the past half a decade. There was also something called “Touchback” in 2011, but I’m not sure anyone got to see that thing, including the actor himself. So will he or won’t he… retire, that is?
