Showtime continues to nab high-quality actors (e.g., Laura Linney, William H. Macy) for its TV series, this time landing Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan for “Masters of Sex.” The show will premiere in 2013.
Oh, happy day! Sheen is a versatile actor who excels in drama and comedy (“30 Rock,” “Frost/Nixon”), and Caplan was all kinds of awesome as Adam Scott’s co-worker/love interest in the quickly canceled, forever tremendous Starz! series “Party Down.” In short, they’re two actors who deserve every kind of success so in 10 years they’re not doing dinner theater or co-starring on a CW sitcom with some shrill comedian-on-the-rise. Wish them luck.
“Masters of Sex” follows the relationship of 1960s human sexuality pioneers William Masters (Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Caplan). The cast also includes Beau Bridges, Caitlin Fitzgerald (“It’s Complicated”) and Margo Martindale (“Justified”). Based on Thomas Maier’s acclaimed 2009 book about the couple, the project is written by Michelle Ashford (“The Pacific”) and directed by John Madden (“Shakespeare in Love”).
Nicely done, Showtime. You’ve come a long way since “Sherman Oaks.”
