Here’s your box office report for this past weekend (complete with snarky commentary):
.) “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” $35.5M. Down from $60.4 million opening weekend. But you know what’s more amazing? Fifteen years ago, Ben Stiller and Chris Rock were considered subversive talents. Now, they’re leading the box office in an animated feature about adrift zoo animals. Scripted by the guy who wrote “The Squid and the Whale.”
.) “Prometheus,” $20.2M. Down from $50 million opening weekend. Sensing a theme for this week’s report? It’s a good, scary flick and Michael Fassbender is excellent. Plus, the movie is completely open to interpretation.
.) “Rock of Ages,” $15.1M. Saw this Friday morning. The atmosphere in the multiplex was funereal, not the mood you want for a rousing rock n’ roll musical. Many expected this to top the box office. Many expected Julianne Hough to be a star. On the second point, can someone please explain what her appeal is? I’m legitimately baffled.
.) “Snow White and the Huntsman,” $13.8M. Just so we’re clear, this is not for kids. I, an adult with a mortgage and a wife, was freaked out by this.
.) “That’s My Boy,” $13M. Oof. But there’s good news: Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler will reunite for “Grown Ups 2.” Really.
