Remember when I rhetorically wondered whether “Fast & Furious” had become the new “Expandables”? I guess I just got my answer. A non-rhetorical one, too. And it’s yes.
Following Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Paul Walker, Tony Jaa and Tyrese Gibson, all confirmed for the seventh title in the franchise, and Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell, who are reportedly still in negotiations with the producers, one more big Hollywood name has joined James Wan’s action extravaganza: Djimon Hounsou.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, is that Djimon Hounsou, the twice Oscar nominated thespian for “In America” and “Blood Diamond”? In the flesh. But why is he then hanging out with a gang that has but one Golden Globe and two Razzie noms, plus an array of MTV and Kids’ Choice trophies? I guess the Benin native has bills to pay, just like any Bob, Bill and Joe.
Plus, let’s face it, he hasn’t really been in the limelight much since the 2006 “Blood Diamond”, starring in nada in 2012 and in “Special Forces” (?) and “Elephant White” (??) in 2011. You see, it’s almost as if Hounsou needs “Fast & Furious 7” more than the film needs him, more so as his future prospects also include “Baggage Claim”, “Seventh Son” and a horror called “The Vatican Tapes”.
