Nina Davuluri, a 24-year-old Syracuse native aspiring to be a doctor, is the new Miss America. This year’s Miss New York is the first woman of Indian American descent to win the coveted crown. This year’s pageant tried hard to be current, asking contestants questions about Syria and Miley Cyrus. They allowed the ladies to display both a sense of humor and pop culture cred in their intros. Take for example Miss New Mexico’s intro:
“I’m not Breaking Bad, I’m breaking through. Say my name, Alexis Duprey, Miss New Mexico.”
Miss Louisiana referenced Duck Dynasty, while Miss New Jersey quipped about being from the real Jersey shore.
Davuluri performed a Bollywood fusion dance for her talent. During the question and answer, she got quizzed about The Talk host Julie Chen’s revelation that she had plastic surgery to appear “less Asian.”
“Miss America is always evolving… I wouldn’t want to change someone’s looks. Be confident in who you are.”
Unfortunately, her victory brought out some of America’s lesser evolved. Shortly after her win, commenters took to the Web branding Davuluri “a terrorist” and calling her “Miss 7-11.” Some said it was too close to Sept. 11 for her to be crowned. She’s taken all the negative attention in stride, saying she considers herself an American first and foremost.
