Canada’s been an impressive pipeline for Syfy, and they’re keeping that going with the US rights to air Bitten. The supernatural drama is based on Kelly Armstrong’s Women of the Underworld novels, and tells the story of the world’s only female werewolf.
Smallville’s former Supergirl Laura Vandervoort will star as Elena Michaels, who is not too thrilled about her dual identity. She’s trying desperately to hide those aspects of her from her boyfriend. Then someone or something begins murdering members of her pack. Suddenly, Elena finds that she cares about her werewolf kin more than she realized.
In addition to Bitten, Syfy is currently airing Canadian imports Defiance and Continuum. As it gets back to its science fiction roots, the NBCUniversal property has realized it doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel. It has tracked down buzzworthy shows and added them to the lineup of monster themed B-movies, wrestling and reality TV. One of its popular Syfy “originals,” Being Human, is a remake of a British drama.
Syfy’s Sharknado was so ludicrous it became a cultural phenomenon that earned a one-night appearance in an actual movie theaters. Of course, it will get a sequel. The network has people talking, even if they’re sometimes asking each other what the heck they’re watching.
