Two of the great divas of our time- Miss Piggy and Lady Gaga- will meet at last, when the Muppets and the oft-controversial pop singer team up to host a televised holiday special for ABC, E! Online reported Tuesday.
Not much detail has been revealed about the special, but both the Muppets and the singer have new projects to promote: Gaga’s album “Artpop” comes out Nov. 8, and the Muppets’ new movie, “Muppets Most Wanted,” is scheduled for release next March 14.
As the E! Online story notes, Kermit the Frog was Gaga’s date to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, which is certain to lead to friction with Miss Piggy. Meanwhile, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop- which despite the Henson connection is no longer a corporate sibling of the Muppet franchise- has created props for past Gaga tours.
It’s unclear if the special will address this:
The new movie, set to star Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell, is a sequel to 2011’s triumphant Muppets comeback film. Set throughout Europe, the film follows the Muppets on a worldwide comeback tour and falling into shenanigans very much in the tradition of “The Great Muppet Caper.”
Lady Gaga was originally one of the many celebrity cameos in the 2011 Muppets movie, but her part was cut from the film.
