Bullock contemplates in "Gravity"

This film is full of beautiful imagery… thanks to shots like this from director Alfonso Cuaron.

Here is your box office reportcomplete with snarky commentary, for this past weekend.

1.) Gravity$31M. Sandra Bullock’s spacesuit strip: Alfonso Cuaron’s ode to Barbarella? Or an artistic way for us to ogle Sandra Bullock? I vote for option number one (which is terrific), but the more I think about it, the more that scene vexes me. The character is scrambling for life, and then we get this borderline burlesque diversion? It’s still an awesome movie, though.

2.) Captain Phillips, $17.3M. I have my quibbles with Paul Greengrass’ latest film, but I think Tom Hanks is excellent in the title role. He’s so good that I’ve nearly forgiven him for Larry Crowne

3.) Carrie, $17M. Judy Greer’s gym teacher, as several folks have pointed out, is the most interesting character of everyone in this remake. That’s a bit of a problem.

4.) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, $10.1M. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play was a lot better.

5.) Escape Plan, $9.8M. Was expected to do huge business–then moviegoers remembered it wasn’t 1985.
