As the dust is finally beginning to settle on “Expendables 3” casting, following a heated past few months, with both high-profile arrivals and departures from the franchise, it’s time to start seriously discussing the all-female spin-off(s) that have looked like jokes so far.
Erm, you know, as seriously as one could talk about an action flick called “ExpendaBelles” (yes, really) and another starring Gina Carano of “Haywire” and Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica.
And let’s face it, the former sounds far more intriguing (in a guilty pleasure kind of way), more so as Avi Lerner (“Rambo”, “The Expendables 2”) is reportedly on board as an executive producer. Plus, he claims to be in early negotiations with a number of Hollywood leading ladies, of which he’s revealed three names.
First, there’s Milla Jovovich, who sounds like the most predictable choice as well as maybe the closest name big-screen dames have of a Sylvester Stallone kind of leading figure. After all, the Ukrainian-born beauty has kicked ass in five “Resident Evil” titles, plus “The Fifth Element” alongside Bruce Willis.
Then there’s Cameron Diaz, who doesn’t exactly have a proven track record with operating weaponry, but who’s been an integral part of a once promising action franchise, “Charlie’s Angels”. Finally, and make sure you’re seated, Lerner is apparently courting Meryl Streep, likely for the role of ExpendaBelle employer rather than anything else, though I’m secretly rooting for the three-time Oscar winner to play the main baddie.
True, it would be quite the change of pace compared with, say, her villainous turn in “The Devil Wears Prada”, but does anyone really think Streep isn’t capable of badassery? We’re talking about the “Iron Lady” here, for crying out loud, albeit one has to wonder how many zeroes would persuade maybe the greatest actress in history to turn from glamorous biopics and tear-jerking dramas to action fluff?
