In the latest batch of wtf news, Britney Spears is not just a pop icon these days. And no, I am not referring to “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman.” But if that’s what you guessed, then give yourself a gold star for Britney knowledge! Instead, the popstar has been used as a WEAPON. Her hits have been recently used to monitor maritime activities, and apparently they are working to keep Somali pirates at bay.
According to Time:
“In a bid to deter the pirates from approaching supertankers on the east coast of Africa and attempting to kidnap their crews, ships have begun blasting the poppy oeuvre of Spears, including classic hits like “…Baby One More Time” and “Toxic.”
But why did they choose Britney Spears to blast across the seas?
Rachel Owens, merchant navy officer, said:
“Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them the most. These guys can’t stand Western culture of music, making Britney’s hits perfect.”
Although there are plenty of other options, Steven Jones, of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry said, “I’d imagine using Justin Bieber would be against the Geneva Convention.”
Sorry, Biebs, I guess you really are that bad. Anyways, as a true Britney fan, I find it hard to believe that these Somali pirates can’t endure the pop sensation. And I can only imagine how Britney Spears would feel about that.
It’s okay, Britney. We’ll get through this together. Just remember, you were in the Mickey Mouse Club from the start and Christina Aguilera wasn’t!
