The project title says it all. Former wrestler and reigning champion of action moviemaking, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is attached to a new film where he will play a member of an elite military group that battles – you guessed it, demons. Apparently, what ‘Jonah Hex,’ ‘Ghost Rider,’ and ‘Constantine‘ can’t cure, the ‘SEAL Team 666′ can.
In an exclusive for The Hollywood Reporter, MGM is announcing that Johnson is involved and will also executive produce along with Dany Garcia, as well as Brendan Deneen and Peter Joseph of Macmillan Films. Apparently the Evan Spiliotopoulos penned script is based on a book byby Weston Ochse which deals with a secret force protecting our planet from evil threats both serious and supernatural.
Now, Johnson has a relationship with the scribe. He’s just finished up a starring turn as muscle-bound man-God Hercules, also crafted by Spiliotopoulos. That Brett Ratner helmed action epic is set to bow in July of 2014. In the meantime, the athlete turned actor is busying himself on James Wan’s installment of the ‘Fast and Furious‘ franchise, and his name has been bandied about for various projects, including a post-earthquake disaster rescue something-or-other called ‘San Andreas,’ and a possible reboot of the Lee Major’s vehicle ‘The Fall Guy,’ of all things. In fact, it’s hard to find something that The Rock is not associated with. There are constant rumors flying around this studly superstar and his next career move.
There’s also a lot of unrealized ambitions and incidental industry talk. Still, his fortunes are more than secure, considering his occasional forays back to his WWF/WWE days and his reputation for being a “franchise” saver (he’s credited for giving new life to ‘Fast and Furious,’ as well as the ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ and ‘GI Joe’ series). While he’s not quite in the same league has Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger, his present position easily trumps Jason Statham and his ‘F&F‘ co-star Vin Diesel. A big budget effort with lots of soldier on Satan beatdowns may be the tempting tentpole to launch the man into the further reaches the Hollywood hierarchy. Hopefully, ‘SEAL Team 666′ will be a devilishly good popcorn flick. The Rock has proven very good at those as of late.
