Soul singer D’ Angelo has made more headlines for his legal troubles than his music in recent years. He pled to disorderly conduct after soliciting prostitution from an undercover officer. He’s also had arrests for marijuana possession and DUI. D’ Angelo took the stage at Sunday night’s BET Awards for his first TV performance in 12 years.
While he may not still have the rock hard abs that he made famous in his videos, his sound is still drawing rave reviews. The singer did some of his 2000 smash “How Does It Feel” before showing off a new new song, “Sugar Daddy.” Reportedly he has a new album in the works. D’Angelo is expected to take the stage at this week’s Essence Festival.
His return was one of the highlights of the 2012 BET Awards. The night’s showstopper was a soul-stirring Whitney Houston tribute, including a rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” by her mother Cissy. There was some unexpected humor when Kanye West and Jay-Z won the award for Best Video. Jay-Z interrupted West’s speech, a joking reference to his infamous gaffe during Taylor Swift’s MTV Awards win.
BET’s censors proved slow on the “bleep” button, a fact entertainers seemed to take more and more advantage of as the night wore on. Best Gospel winner Yolanda Adams asked the celebrities to use the stage a little more respectfully. “Please make sure that you use your gift responsibly, `cause we’re watching. Our babies are watching, and they want to be like us.”
