It’s not unusual for overall mediocre or downright awful movies to look good enough in a couple of technical departments so as to score one or two Oscar noms, and “The Lone Ranger”, “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” and “Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters” may well follow on the footsteps of “Norbit”, “The Wolfman” and “Click.”
The first three titles mentioned above are part of the 7-name shortlist for next year’s best makeup and hairstyling Oscar. And odds are at least one will end up among the final contenders, despite Academy voters looking to narrow down the list to just three names.
The thing is two of the other four candidates seem to enter the race like lambs to the slaughter, namely “Dallas Buyers Club” and “The Great Gatsby”. So, as much as you despised “Lone Ranger”, “Bad Grandpa” and “Hansel & Gretel”, you’ll probably have to get used to the thought of one of them checking the Oscar nomination box.
As for the final two contestants, “American Hustle” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, they both look in good shape to get the nods and possibly battle it out for the win. A battle that might have been much more evenly contested if Oscar voters wouldn’t have inexplicably snubbed “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug”, “Rush”, “12 Years a Slave” and “Oz: The Great and Powerful”, among others. It’s like they wanted to shock us, eh?
