Lifetime is trying to shed its reputation as the home of low-budget films starring former Beverly Hills 90210 and Charlie’s Angels castmembers. It wants to do edgier programming that gets people talking. Jennifer Love Hewitt’s turn as a naughty masseuse in The Client List earned a second season, in spite of critical bashing.
The network’s decision to remake “Steel Magnolias” with an all African-American cast is earning a lot of attention. Queen Latifah is the star and executive producer of this project. Alfre Woodard, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye, Phylicia Rashad and her daughter Condola, who has become an accomplished actress in her own right, round out the cast.
