Marvel may have cast a big name as its smallest superhero. Variety is reporting that “Anchorman 2″ star Paul Rudd will take on the role of Ant-Man. His name had been discussed for a while, along with that of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He signed on to produce and likely appear in a Sandman movie. That may have cleared the way for Rudd completely.
Several heroes have donned the Ant-Manmantle, and we don’t know yet which one Rudd might be playing. The first, Dr. Henry Pym, is a brilliant scientist who discovers a way to shrink and communicate with insects. Don’t laugh, Ant-Man’s unique skillset has allowed him to save the likes of Iron Man and The Hulk on multiple occasions.
He’s actually a founding member of The Avengers but the film universe followed a different path, focusing on some of the most marketable heroes. It’s hard to argue with the results they’ve gotten so far. When I think of Captain America and Iron Man now, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. are the voices I imagine. Mark Ruffalo has even settled into the Hulk role, one Marvel had a lot of trouble filling.
Rudd is more known for comedy, but a character that can shrink to ant size often gets himself in humorous situations.
