Shell yeah! Nickelodeon has announced the premiere date for the return of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in animated form. The new show will begin with two episodes 11 a.m. September 29.

Voicing this new incarnation of the Turtles is Jason Biggs as Leonardo, Sean Astin as Raphael, Greg Cipes as Michaelangelo and Rob Paulsen as Donatello. Paulsen is a veteran of the original show, in which he played Raphael.

In the 90s the Ninja Turtles were a pop culture phenom, with a cartoon, movies and all the merchandising trappings. They were among the few superheroes whose video games were actually well done, further endearing them to their core audience of young boys. The Turtles even danced with Vanilla Ice to create Ninja Rap in a quintessential 90s moment.

As we’ve learned from Transformers and G.I. Joe remakes, nothing that was popular once stays gone for very long. There was even a Michael Bay Turtles film project in the work. Longtime fans were outraged over a plot that would have made the characters aliens, not mutants. That movie is now on hold. Can Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles find a cartoon audience in 2012?
