Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue celebrates fifty years of success on Monday, proving that people like to see girls in swimsuits no matter what year it is. Who knew?!
The first issue of SI Swimsuit hit newsstands on Jan. 20, 1964, and featured german-born model Babette March. The issue was a huge success as the testosterone-fueled readers of SI decided, “Hey, we can sacrifice one issue in the name of boobs.” (Actual quote by imaginary man in my head.)
The magazine held a red carpet event to honor its half-century of success on Tuesday. The event was hosted by Heidi Klum, a Swimsuit Issue veteran, and attended talented people along with nearly every model to ever grace the pages of the magazine.
Musical guests, including John Legend, performed to honor the publication’s success. The event is set to air Feb. 3. at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, but who can wait that long?!
Swimsuit Issue favorite Kate Upton, who made hearts flutter from the cover of the issue for the past two years, was first to step onto the red carpet and was followed by a pack of gorgeous swimsuit models.
It wouldn’t be a Swimsuit Issue event without the classics! Tyra Banks and Christie Brinkley joined Klum on the red carpet, showing newbies like Ireland Baldwin and Katherine Webb just how it’s done. Snap, snap.
The event is accompanied by the release of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit: 50 Years of Beautiful, a coffee table book featuring every cover and every model to ever appear in the issue. Valentine’s day gift shopping just got a whole lot easier for us women!
