Last week’s oddly unfunny and patently racist episode of How I Met Your Mother, with its weak kung-fu parody attempt launched a Twitter campaign (#HowIMetYourRacism) that prompted an apology from series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.
In case you missed it, the long-running Slap Bet between Marshall and Barney came into play; Marshall attempted to intimidate Barney by saying he studied slapping in China. In the ep, Marshall offered “much gold” to masters for their tutelage, and the several stereotypical Asian slap-masters were Colbie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan in Cheongsam dresses and Josh Radnor in a droopy mustache pretending to be Chinese.
HIMYM could have easily done a parody of “Django” instead of “Kill Bill” and it also would have gone horribly wrong, but they would have known from the start not to do it. And yet, yellowface happened.
I may hate the tagline “thanks” as much as I hate it when people sarcastically say, “you’re welcome” after providing a bit of info (except when John Hodgeman does it). Thanks for not allowing this blatant display of racism to ruin the end of the HIMYM series? History will decide that, not a neatly worded tweet. They say it’s better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission, but many may find it hard to forgive the sour tone HIMYM is going out on in its final season.
