It’s rarely wise to kick off a TV project with such a confusing central concept that the title itself needs clarification. But when said series is executive produced by Steven Spielberg and headlined in front of the camera by Halle Berry, it’s safe to assume people will tune in to check it out even if you name it “Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”.
Fortunately, Spielberg, CBS and writer and co-executive producer Mickey Fisher decided to go with Extant, an idiom whose meaning should be rather clear after the watching of the below embedded 25-second clip.
There you have it, “still in existence, the opposite of extinct”. So what’s the show about again? Well, that’s a slightly tougher nut to crack. Apparently, it revolves around a female astronaut (no, not Sandra Bullock), who returns home to her family after a year in outer space.
But of course, that’s just peeling off the first layer, as you don’t really expect Spielberg and Berry to be involved in such a mundane, straightforward-sounding network drama. No siree, as this is actually a sci-fi series, and the teaser alludes to plenty of mind-bending scientific concepts.
Word around the street is Berry’s character won’t find it difficult to readjust to life on Earth just because her husband is cheating on her or something, but also as she realizes she didn’t come alone from outer space (dun dun dun).
Enough spoilers, especially as they’re sheer wild guesses for now. Extant debuts on CBS July 2, being slated to run for 13 episodes in its first (and hopefully not last) on-air stint.
