When it was announced earlier this year that Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and actress Zooey Deschanel were splitting up, my first reaction was to feel bad for them. But I probably wasn’t alone in also thinking- “the next Death Cab album is going to be AWESOME.”
Now, it appears if Gibbard is planning to go it alone first. The singer will release his first solo album, which is called “Former Lives,” this October, the AV Club reported.
The set is culled from eight years of songs, so it won’t all be recent stuff, although there’s still a chance at least some of the record will be a “breakup album” in the tradition of Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks,” Beck’s “Sea Change” and (more recently) Norah Jones’ “Little Broken Hearts.” Perhaps somewhere in there there’ll be a lyrical dig at those girls who need to ask their iPhone whether or not it’s raining outside.
