Yes, there has already been one Hercules movie this year. “Legend of Hercules” starred Kellen Lutz, and snuck into and out of cineplexes quickly, without anyone noticing. There are considerably higher expectations for the upcoming “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Brett Ratner is directing, and it sounds as if Johnson will flex his comedic as well as dramatic chops. In addition to Hercules, he’ll play both Zeus and Achilles, another legendary hero.
Johnson is big about engaging with his legions of Twitter followers. He’l unveil the latest trailer for this July 25 action epic Tuesday during a Rock Talk on his Twitter. The film will also feature Ian McShane as Amphiarus, a priest and prophet who serves as counsel to Hercules. Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt and Ingrid Bolso Berdal also star. Wrestling fans should look out for a cameo from The Rock’s cousin, WWE diva Tamina Snuka.
I think this one has a chance to do slightly better than “The Legend of Hercules.” I know my wife is far more excited about this one, and a I can’t figure out why. She’s never expressed much interest in Greek mythology before.
