The Central Intelligence Agency, the old-by-now joke goes, has been “following” all of us for quite some time (though really, that was the NSA.) Now, you can follow them back. America’s leading spy agency on Friday officially joined Twitter, under the handle @CIA. Here was their first tweet:
We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.

The jokes, quips and denunciations of drone strikes and long-ago coups d’tat began to fly almost immediately:
I can't wait for next season of Homeland, when Carrie has a passionate affair with the ironic hipster who runs the @CIA twitter account.

Seems like the @CIA has really misread Twitter and gotten itself into a quagmire. This is the first time in its history that's happened.

That hilarious first tweet by the @CIA totally makes up for all the abductions, torture, and extrajudicial killings.
— Koen Rouwhorst (@koenrh) June 7, 2014
Would @cia torture have happened if the officers knew they were being Vined? I don't think so.

Now we'll find out if the @CIA will ever retweet in the face of danger.
— Tommy Christopher (@tommyxtopher) June 6, 2014
The @CIA has started a cutesy Twitter account. The thump you hear is Orwell making an "I give up" gesture in his grave.
— James Urbaniak (@JamesUrbaniak) June 7, 2014
