Here’s your box office report for this past weekend, which saw “22 Jump Street” beat “How to Train Your Dragon 2″ in a battle of summer sequels. The final tally: “22 Jump Street,” $60 million; “Dragon 2,” $50 million. So if you went to the movies you most likely saw one of those two. And if you wanted to take a nap you saw “A Million Ways to Die in the West.”
Other highlights: Well, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” reached the $200 million mark and “Blended” made its money back. And “The Fault in Our Stars,” last week’s number one, took a mighty tumble.
As always, these figures are estimates, so consider that when you’re preparing taxes next year.
1.) “22 Jump Street,” $60M. What’s most impressive about the film’s haul is that it was in some 900 fewer theaters than “How To Train Your Dragon 2,” which got the 3-D treatment.
2.) “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” $50M. My guess is that this should stick around for a bit because the elementary schools are starting to empty for summer vacation.
3.) “Maleficent,” $19M. Here’s something for you to chew on: At the end of the day, what is Angelina Jolie’s legacy as an actress?
4.) “Edge of Tomorrow,” $16.2M. What character is meaner: Emily Blunt’s super-soldier here or her work as Anne Hathaway’s secretarial nemesis in The Devil Wears Prada?
5.) “The Fault in Our Stars,” $15.7M. OK, kids, now go see The Spectacular Now.
