There’s something almost magical about the way Marvel keeps teasing its craziest gamble since the first “Iron Man”, keeping “Guardians of the Galaxy” in the limelight for a solid few months now, yet revealing very little on the actual plot and virtually nothing on the villains these quirky, unconventional heroes will go up against.
I mean, sure, we all know the story’s rough outline. A bunch of outcasts, including a talking raccoon and not so articulate tree, need to team up to save the world when all other options fail. But why do they fail?
And what exactly is this unseen menace Star-Lord & co. have to fend off? Does it have something to do with Benicio Del Toro’s cryptic The Collector character? Is Lee Pace instead the main baddie? Will Josh Brolin as Thanos make a solid, intricate appearance, or simply set the mood for a now predictable, standalone, non-“Avengers”-related sequel?
Granted, many a comic book aficionados can probably guess the answers to at least some of those questions. But for anyone else with, you know, a life, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is currently all about hilarious banters between Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon and Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill. Period.
I can’t even begin to anticipate what else will go down in the atypical sci-fi flick come August 1, and that’s both refreshing and awesome. Keep it up, Marvel, and you’ll have another multi-billion-dollar franchise on your hands in no time.
