CNN doesn’t need any more bad news, considering its recent ratings trouble. One of its biggest TV draws is in serious trouble after liberally borrowing from a New Yorker piece.  Fareed Zakaria copied ideas from a Jill Lepore column on gun control for a Time Magazine article. He blogged about the article on CNN’s site, using some of the same material he didn’t attribute.

Time has suspended him for a month, CNN has done so indefinitely. His program, Fareed Zakaria GPS, is a large component of CNN’s foreign affairs coverage. The embattled news network is having a hard enough time filling slots, and this isn’t exactly helping.

It’s too early to tell what long term damage this will do to Zakaria. After all, Joe Biden plagiarized parts of speeches from a British politician and is now vice president of the United States. But in the short term, it’s a severe hit to CNN’s credibility.
