In some ways, it’s perfect casting. While she was married to Tom Cruise, former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ hottie and Bruce Wayne love interest Katie Holmes was reduced to a series of speculative jokes about her relationship with her superstar husband, the parentage of her child Suri, and her connection to Scientology. Many believed she had become a robotic cult bride, trapped in some prearranged nuptials. Others claimed she was Stepford like, perhaps hiding a dark, disturbing secret. Now, thanks to the trailer for the new indie film ‘Miss Meadows,’ all of this conjecture can now be connected to the latest character in the actress’s limited onscreen canon.
In actress turned writer/director Karen Leigh Hopkins’ 15 year long labor of love/cautionary tale, Holmes plays a mild mannered elementary school teacher who moonlights as an armed vigilante. Apparently, she suffered a trauma at some point in her life (the preview suggests it might have something to do with sexual assault) and has now decided to rid the world of all “ugliness.” Armed with her little pop gun, she’s packing heat and taking down creeps. Overall, it’s an intriguing sell. Check it out:
This seems like the perfect part for Holmes. After her high profile relationship, she needs something to jumpstart her once promising career…and ‘The Giver‘ isn’t it. Here, we get a potent combination of the likeable and the lethal, Holmes comforting a young girl one moment, whipping out her pocket book sized pistol the next. In fact, it should be fun to see how the story develops. Apparently, Holmes falls for the local sheriff (James Badge Dale of ’24′ fame) and he soon grows suspicious. Reviews out of the Tribeca Film Festival were a bit mixed, but this still looks like a late Fall sleeper. ‘Miss Meadows’ should hit theaters sometime in November.
