The long-awaited movie version of Jennifer Saunders’ Absolutely Fabulous is finalizing casting choices, and they will pull any Ab Fab fan’s interest: the original cast will return, along with every star who ever appeared in the series. That’s huge, or as the British might say, “massive.”
Bust breathlessly reports:
Saunders has just declared that the entirety of the show’s original cast will reprise their roles in the film adaptation, and hopefully every star who made a cameo appearance in the show’s five-season run. “I haven’t got the storyline completely sorted out yet,” she said, “but I want to cast everyone who has ever been in the show in it.”
There were just (just!) 39 episodes of Ab Fab, and the stunt casting runs very deeply, on many levels and meta-levels. It’s a veritable croissant of layers, the buttery casting representing the meaning of the show itself : Great Britain, fashion, celebrity, being a woman, being a mother, a daughter. There is a whole wiki subsection on the Ab Fab “special guest,” and they are all exceptional. From the Oscar-winners, Helena Bonham Carter and Whoopi Goldberg, to pop icons Elton John, Emma Bunton, Debbie Harry, and Suzy Quatro.
There are the fashion icons Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christian LaCroix, and Stella McCartney, and the supermodels Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Twiggy. One super fun stunt casting moment was Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg – significant others of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards – playing God and the devil.
And then there is Lulu, the petite Scottish chanteuse with the huge voice known for belting the 60s hits “To Sir With Love” and “Downtown,” who played herself on Ab Fab – a disgruntled, long-suffering but polite client of Edwina Monsoon’s.
