Jerry Nelson and his friend The Count

Jerry Nelson, a mainstay of Jim Henson’s company of Muppet puppeteers who worked on The Muppet Show, Sesame Street and other Muppet works for over 50 years, died Thursday at the age of 78.

The Muppet Wiki reported Nelson’s death, citing a Facebook post by his family.

Nelson, who had worked with the Muppets and Henson since the early 1960s, was most associated with The Count, although he also originated the Mr. Snuffleupagus character and performed various Fraggles on Fraggle Rock.

While Nelson retired from puppeteering in 2004, he still performed The Count’s voice on new Sesame Street episodes right up until his death, and played the announcer in last year’s “The Muppets” feature film.
