Batman’s popularity is head and shoulders above other DC superheroes, so he’s never off TV long. Cartoon Network’s last Batman series, The Brave and The Bold, played for laughs. He rode dinosaurs with Plastic Man and showed up in the Wild West alongside Jonah Hex with little to no explanation.
Some diehard fans didn’t appreciate a take that was more Adam West than Christian Bale. Cartoon Network’s latest offering, Beware the Batman, is in CGI but he’s a Dark Knight all the way. The network has released a brief teaser trailer:
The Dark Knight Rises is coming this summer, with Warner Bros expecting a fair amount of Bat-mania in return. Beware the Batman will involve some of Batman’s classic rogues, but will focus on lesser known enemies. Announced so far are Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. The Caped Crusader will have a new sidekick in Katana, a swordswoman from DC Comics’ Outsiders. Assisting them in the field will be Alfred Pennyworth, who in this version of Batman’s tale is a former secret agent.
Cartoon Network’s promotion of an “action ready” Alfred makes my inner fanboy cringe a little bit, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see it. It’s produced by Mitch Watson (Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated) and Glen Murakami. (Batman Beyond) That futuristic take on the Bat mythology became so well-liked DC made an ongoing comic series that picked up where the TV show left off.
Beware the Batman joins the DC Nation block of shows which currently includes Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Super Best Friends Forever. It’s slated for a debut in 2013. Look out, CGI evildoers.
