While promoting her new movie, “The Giant Mechanical Man,” actress Malin Akerman told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s afraid “Inferno” may never get made. In the long-delayed film, Akerman would play the late porn star Linda Lovelace, who was best known for the 1972 crossover classic Deep Throat.
“Last I heard, which was just before Christmas, we were supposed to start shooting in March, and now it’s April. It’s been one of those doomed films that I absolutely love and totally believe in, I love the script, I think it’s such a well-written script about the behind-the-scenes of a battered woman.”
The issue, she says, has largely been financing.
“It’s a big one to take a chance on because it’s really some heavy content. So I don’t know what’s been going on, I don’t know why it hasn’t gone yet. I would hope and love for it to go, but now this other movie is coming on that Amanda Seyfried did, and I kind of feel like, ‘Sh*t, we should have been on that, we should have done it,’ ” she said.
This is probably a blessing in disguise. The last time I checked no one is putting Akerman with talented young actresses like Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, or Emma Stone. (Geez, how great would Williams have been?) She’s perfectly fine, but playing someone as tortured as Linda Lovelace? That’s a smidge too ambitious for Akerman’s range, methinks.
Still, give the lady credit for going outside her comfort zone. She clearly knows that being blonde and beatuiful isn’t a long-term survival plan. The good thing, as THR points out, is that Akerman has a ton of future projects. Maybe one of those will push her career in a bold, new direction.
Here’s hoping. I thought she was fantastic in The Wedding Bride.
