Pacino Eyed to Play Paterno

The shocking news broke Friday that Al Pacino is in line to star as the late Penn State coach Joe Paterno in a new movie about the Penn State scandal.

Deadline reported that the ICM agency is preparing a package for a film, starring Pacino as Paterno, and based on Paterno, the recently released biography of the coach by sportswriter Joe Posnanski. The book, despite less than positive reviews, debuted in the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Rick Nicita is the producer; no director is mentioned.

Pacino has been playing lots of historical figures lately in HBO movies, including Roy Cohn, Dr. Jack Kevorkian and Phil Spector in an upcoming film. Of course, it wouldn’t be the actor’s first time playing an aging football coach at the end of his rope:
