It’s not easy being “the next Spielberg.” Just ask M. Night Shyamalan. Ever since ‘Time’ tagged him as the up and coming Prince of the Blockbusters, we fans have been waiting for the work to be worthy of the King…and so far…well, can you say ‘The Lady in the Water?’ ‘The Happening?’ ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender?’ ‘After Earth?’ Every time he steps up to make another movie, the same amount of anticipation occurs, and the same amount of disappointment is the outcome.
So, naturally, the creator of ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Unbreakable’ is headed to the small screen, producing and directing the first episode of the limited series for Fox, ‘Wayward Pines.’ Based on the novel from Blake Crouch and developed by Chad Hodge, the story centers around a Federal Agent (Matt Dillon) who ends up lost in the title town. Initially, he was looking for a couple of his fellow Feds. Now, he’s trying to find a way out, stuck in a strange, surreal community run by a deceptive sheriff (Terrence Howard) and populated with quirky characters (Calling ‘Twin Peaks!’ Calling ‘Twin Peaks!’).
Those expecting this to save his career fortunes will probably be disappointed. Shyamalan will only be involved directly for the first installment. Those working on the rest of the 10 ordered episodes have not been announced. Fox plans on premiering ‘Wayward Pines‘ as a midseason replacement sometime this year. If he succeeds at rebuilding his reputation, Shyamalan may once again be celebrated as an able artist. If he doesn’t – well, there’s always ‘The Happening 2.’
