Seven Psychopaths, a crime comedy to be released in October coming from acclaimed playwright/screenwriter/director Martin McDonagh, is being promoted by one of the most fun and far-ranging social media campaigns done for a film in a long time, a campaign sure to be of interest to dog-lovers and lovers of Shih-Tzus specifically.
The film teams McDonagh once again with Colin Farrell, the star of McDonagh’s successful and critically-acclaimed film In Bruges. In it Farrell plays an Irish screenwriter living in Hollywood (obviously somewhat autobiographically for McDonagh) who has had some success with violent films (much like McDonagh) but wants to write something more life-affirming. His best friend Billy, played by Sam Rockwell, is an unemployed actor who’s eager to collaborate with him on another violent comedy called “Seven Psychopaths.” Billy makes money by partnering with Hans (Christopher Walken) to kidnap rich peoples’ dogs for ransom. Things get out of hand when Rockwell and Walken kidnap a Shih-Tzu belonging to a violent mob boss played by Woody Harrelson, and as a result Farrell’s character is dragged into the world he writes about but has never experienced first-hand.

So, too recap we’ve got Martin McDonagh, Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Zeljo Ivanek, Tom Waits, and one of the cutest Shih-Tzus I’ve seen. Forget The Master, this is my most-anticipated film of the fall.
Adding to the fun is the social media promotional campaign for the movie, which has included an active twitter presence for Woody Harrelson’s character, and the release of this poster on tumblr and facebook.
