Want to know the box office power of male sexuality and/or stripping? Want to understand why well-muscled men are dropping blou and trou for cinema fans around the world? Look no further than ‘Magic Mike‘ the 2012 indie drama from Steven Soderbergh that took Channing Tatum, future Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, and a collection of hulking hunks and oiled them up for near naked viewing pleasure. The result? $167 million on a $7 million budget. Not too shabby. In fact, such totals were significant enough to warrant a sequel. While Mateo is on to bigger and broader projects, Tatum has returned, and he’s brought some boffo beefcake along for the ribald ride in ‘Magic Mike XXL.‘
Soderbergh gives Gregory Jacobs a chance behind the director’s chair while he handles the cinematography and editing. Among the returning cast members are Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, and Matt Bomer, with some newbies (Jada Pinkett Smith, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, and Michael Strahan) joining the familiar faces. The story centers on Mike (Tatum) returning to the strip game for one last major league blow…out. He gets together with the gang for a road trip to Myrtle Beach, and of course, some hot man action hijinx ensue. The trailer is full of guy grinding. Check it out:
I can hear the drunken bachelorette parties and overworked soccer moms screaming at the top of their lungs right about now. The phallic imagery is hilarious (Tatum with a literal grinder, Manganiello getting it on with a water bottle) and the abs are poppin’. According to one voice of reason in the film, Mike and his buddies have to “evolve or die.” Who knew stripping was so existential? Anyway, get ready for ‘Magic Mike XXL’ and its gorgeous guys to dominate the box office come (he he he) July 1st. And remember – it’s not bro-time, it’s SHOWTIME!
