Kiefer Sutherland sounds serious about being done with Jack Bauer, so Fox is exploring the idea of 24 without its star. The limited series 24: Live Another Day ended with Bauer in Russian custody. Howard Gordon, who oversees the franchise for Fox, told TV Line a new spinoff would revolve around a younger agent. It would begin as a limited series but has the potential to become a regular part of the lineup if viewers respond. Both Gordon and Sutherland have said the character needed a break, and the actor needed a break from playing him.
It looked as if the baton would pass to Yvonne Strahovski’s Kate Morgan character, but this is no longer happening. She may appear, but apparently won’t be the lead. This spinoff would keep the drama’s central conceit, the story being told over a day’s time. Gordon hasn’t ruled out Bauer popping up at a later date. The limited series is all the rage right now, with Heroes Reborn happening at NBC and Fox contemplating this 24 spinoff and Prison Break return.
