A sequel to “Top Gun”? There have been rumors about a return to the Danger Zone almost since the first film came out in 1986. But now there are more legitimate-sounding rumblings: A producer says an interview that the project is in development.
Speaking at a press junket for the new Terminator in Berlin, as reported by Collider, Skydance CEO David Ellison discussed the film, which will now once again star Tom Cruise and focus on drones:
Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is I don’t think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak.
Can “Top Gun” work in the 21st century? I don’t see why not, if you think Cruise is too old for action, he certainly wasn’t in the last “Mission: Impossible,” the current one or “Edge of Tomorrow.”
Of course, if the sequel ends up happening, I just hope the filmmakers have the good sense to make the subtext text:
