I’ve heard rumors about a movie based on “Spy Hunter,” the tremendous 1980s car chase computer/arcade game, for almost 10 years. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was going to star; directors John Woo and Paul W.S. Anderson were attached at some point.
Now, Vulture reports that director Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland,” “30 Minutes or Less”) has signed a deal with Warner Brothers to direct the long-awaited adaptation. A script was written a few years ago by Chad St. John, but FBO says Fleischer will bring in a new screenwriter.
I’ve gotten over questionable source material being used for movies. All I ask is that Fleischer and this mystery writer don’t have the car be the star. Give the chase movie genre a goose, like “Midnight Run” or “The Blues Brothers” did in the 80′s. Options are limitless. The last thing we need is another big-budget, highway smash’em up.
Though, personally, I’d love to see the oil slicks get used.
