“Chinese Democracy”-like, a sequel to the 1994 (um, classic?) film “Dumb and Dumber” has been one of those long-anticipated projects that’s often the subject of rumors but never seems to actually get off the ground.

This is not to be confused with 2003’s non-Farrelly-Brothers-affiliated prequel “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.” I’m talking about an honest-to-goodness Farelly-brothers-written-and-directed sequel starring Jim Carrey and, more importantly, Jeff Daniels, Will McAvoy himself!

As Vulture notes, this project was the subject of three separate rounds of entertainment news stories in 2011 alone. And in April of this year during the press junket for “The Three Stooges,” the Farrelly Brothers announced that production on the sequel, with Carrey and Daniels, was set to begin in September, i.e. now.

Those plans, apparently, haven’t panned out (though there are three or four days left in the month.) New headlines were generated in August when, during the Television Critics Association panel for “The Newsroom,” Daniels acknowledged that Carrey had walked away from the production in frustration, but said that Carrey was back on board and now production was slated to kick off in May or June of 2013.

As Vulture noted, earlier in the week there was a bit of news in the ongoing saga. The Farrelly Brothers posted the following on twitter: “You also might be interested to know that we are almost done with the Dumb and Dumber To (sic) script. I think you’re going to like it.” So, now we have an official title and a supposedly completed script. The only hurdles now will be securing the participation of such mainstays of 90s culture as Lauren Holly and Karen Duffy. Also, in the wake of such Farrelly Brothers-inspired pop cultural moments as the mass diarrhea scene in “Bridesmaids,” how will the Farrelly Brothers up the ante on scenes like this one from the first movie?
