The rap music community is still reeling from the death of influential manager Chris Lighty. He helped bring artists such as 50 Cent and Missy Elliott into the mainstream, getting them multimillion dollar advertising deals. He died from what police believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound in August.
The BET Hip-Hop Awards Saturday night offered a tribute performance featuring Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, Fat Joe, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent. LL Cool J appeared in a video message. Sadly, at the same time the touching tribute was going on, Atlanta police were breaking up a scuffle between two groups. There were no shots fired, and no injuries. Police didn’t identify any of the individuals involved. Numerous reports have Rick Ross and Young Jeezy and their entourages as the ones involved. The pair have been engaged in a war of words on their albums.
Kanye West led all artists with 17 nominations, but did not attend the event. T.I. presented MC Rakim with the “I Am Hip-Hop Icon” Award. Kendrick Lamar won “Lyricist of the Year,” while 2 Chains won the “People’s Choice” Award. In addition to the star-studded Lighty tribute, other live performances included Snoop Dogg, B.o.B. and Wiz Khalifa.
The awards were taped Saturday but will air on BET Oct. 9.
