Automatic For the People, on its 20th anniversary

Automatic for the People">R.E.M.’s “Automatic For the People,” one of the seminal albums of the 1990s turns 20 years old today.

The album, nominated for a Grammy for Best Album that year, included such hits as “Drive,” “Man on the Moon” and “Nightswimming.” It combined various aspects of the band’s sensibility, with some rocking numbers, others more acoustic-oriented, and even one instrumental track.

R.E.M. broke up in 2011.
