CW may have a winning combination with its Thursday night pairing, The Vampire Diaries along with Beauty and The Beast. Much to the chagrin of critics, the 80s remake starring Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan averaged 3.1 million viewers. That’s an increase of 63 percent in adults 18-49 and 33 percent in adults 18-34 from 2011’s The Secret Circle.
Diaries improved also. It was up 25 percent with women aged 18-34, beating ABC and NBC for those viewers. In looking at those numbers, it’s important to note the impact of the vice presidential debates and pro football on cable. It is both political and football season through the beginning of November, however. CW may be in a good place to pick up viewers that don’t care who wins the presidential election or the Super Bowl.
Beauty and the Beast has taken a lot of flak for playing very loosely with the definition of “beast.” Ryan’s beast was the victim of experimentation that makes him incredibly strong and fast, but with bouts of uncontrolled anger. Only a few scars mark his supermodel looks. CW knows its audience though.
