Hollywood is running out of ’80s properties to squeeze money out of, know whut I mean Vern? John Cherry, the creator of lovable dunce Ernest P. Worrell, is working on “Son of Ernest.” The character started in regional commercials, becoming popular enough to headline films such as “Ernest Saves Christmas” and “Ernest Goes to Jail.” They were simple, family friendly fun. The actor who played Ernest, Jim Varney, died in 2000.
Screenwriter Dan Ewen realizes that a lot of people are skeptical about this idea. He told Variety they plan to honor the original movies and Jim Varney while birthing a new chapter that lies “somewhere between not sucking and Earth-shatteringly funny.”
That said, I am hard pressed to remember a “Son Of” offering that didn’t ruin the memory of the original. Varney’s performance was the main reason Ernest works. In the hands of the wrong actor, Ernest (or his son) could just be Vern’s jerky next-door neighbor. Readers, does this sound like an enjoyable idea to you?
