CW’s superhero hit Arrow is the network’s first show to earn a full season pickup. Its premiere earned 4.1 million viewers, CW’s biggest number since The Vampire Diaries. Many of those viewers are in the coveted 18-34 year-old demographic advertisers and TV execs covet.

Stephen Amell stars as Oliver Queen, a billionaire trapped on a deserted island for five years. Upon returning to Starling City, he uses the survival skills he learned to dispense justice. CW took several chances here. Green Arrow is far from a well-known character. It introduced him in Smallville, but then went with a completely different actor and much grittier story. Justin Hartley played Green Arrow on Smallville, while Stephen Amell plays the Emerald Archer in the spinoff. CW dropped the “Green” from his name also.

In a departure from the comic book, this vigilante has no qualms about killing bad guys. Now Queen will have at least 22 episodes to clean up his city.
