Ming-Na, alum of ER and the voice of Disney warrior “Mulan,” has signed on for ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot. The actress has also appeared in sci-fi shows Eureka and Stargate Universe. She’ll be Agent Melinda May, originally called “Althea Rice” in the casting notice. May is a skilled pilot, weapons expert and soldier. Sounds like the perfect fit for Marvel Comics’ supreme spy organization.
We’ve gotten glimpses into the group’s inner workings in Marvel’s movies, most extensively in “The Avengers.” It was S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury’s idea to put a super team together. And have you tried saying no to Samuel L. Jackson? Already in the pilot’s cast is Clark Gregg, who played Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel movies. “Avengers” director and geek god Joss Whedon is co-writing the pilot script with his brother Jed and Maurissa Tancharoen.
The show is only a pilot right now. Considering ABC and Marvel share the same parent company in Walt Disney, and the movies made enough money to fill Scrooge McDuck’s money bin, this show will get every chance to find an audience.
