The show follows a similar formula to Hot in Cleveland, dealing with the problems of a celebrity adjusting to normal life. Cedric’s character, retired R &B singer Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine, moves to St. Louis to pastor his father’s church.
Its premiere drew nearly 2,000,000 viewers but ratings declined from there. The season finale pulled only 992,000 viewers. Cedric called on fans to save the show, providing a petition they could send to TV Land parent company MTV Networks. Niecy Nash and Jazz Raycole portray Ballentine’s wife and daughter. Cedric co-created the sitcom with Suzanne Martin. She was a producer on Ellen and Frasier before creating Hot in Cleveland and The Soul Man.
